WWII "Grasshopper" Patch — L-5 Stinson Light Observation Aircraft World War II Aviation Embroidered Patch
Low. Slow. Deadly accurate. The Grasshoppers were the most feared aircraft of WWII — not because of what they carried, but because of what came next.
The "Grasshopper" L-birds — including the Stinson L-5 Sentinel — were WWII light observation and liaison aircraft that served as the eyes of the artillery and the lifeline of the infantry. Flying low and slow over enemy positions, Grasshopper pilots spotted targets, directed devastating artillery fire, evacuated wounded, and provided commanders with real-time battlefield intelligence. Over 3,600 L-5s were built between 1942 and 1945, serving in every theater from Normandy to Okinawa. On D-Day plus one, an L-5 became the first Allied aircraft to land in France on Utah Beach.
