Training Squadron Five (VT-5) "Pussycats" was a United States Navy training squadron that played a key role in the naval aviation training pipeline, producing the next generation of Navy and Marine Corps aviators. Despite the playful mascot name, the Pussycats ran a demanding training program that tested students' flying skills, decision-making, and ability to perform under pressure.
VT-5 was part of the Training Air Wing structure that takes freshly selected student naval aviators through the progression from basic flight skills to advanced mission training. The Pussycats' instructor pilots were experienced fleet aviators who brought real-world operational knowledge to the training environment, teaching students the fundamental skills they would need throughout their aviation careers. From formation flying to instrument navigation, from emergency procedures to carrier qualification, every flight with a VT-5 instructor was an opportunity to learn from the best and prove readiness for the next level. The squadron's graduates went on to fly every aircraft in the naval aviation inventory.
