This VRC-50 "Foo Dogs" Da Nang patch commemorates the squadron's operations from Da Nang Air Base during the Vietnam War, preserving a critical chapter in the history of fleet logistics support aviation. VRC-50 was deployed to Da Nang to provide carrier onboard delivery and logistics support to the fleet operating in the Western Pacific and Gulf of Tonkin.
VRC-50 operated the C-1A Trader as its primary COD (Carrier Onboard Delivery) aircraft during the Vietnam era, flying critical logistics missions between shore bases and aircraft carriers operating on Yankee Station and Dixie Station in the Gulf of Tonkin. Da Nang Air Base, located on the central coast of South Vietnam, served as a major hub for both combat and support aviation operations. VRC-50's "Foo Dogs" flew countless sorties delivering mail, spare parts, passengers, and high-priority cargo to carriers at sea — a mission that was essential to maintaining fleet readiness during sustained combat operations. "The Link" was VRC-50's nickname, reflecting their role as the vital connection between the fleet and the shore establishment.
