Patrol Squadron One traces its lineage to 15 February 1943, when it was commissioned as Bombing Squadron 128 in DeLand, Florida. Today VP-1 operates the Boeing P-8A Poseidon from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington, flying anti-submarine warfare, surface surveillance, and maritime patrol missions across the Pacific and beyond. The Screaming Eagles nickname was adopted in 1985, replacing the earlier Fleet's Finest identity, and the squadron has carried that name through deployments spanning Desert Shield, sustained Pacific operations, and global maritime patrol commitments.
