VMSB-342 was a Marine Scout Bombing squadron that served during World War II as part of the massive expansion of Marine Corps aviation. Flying dive bombers in the Pacific theater, VMSB-342 conducted precision bombing attacks against enemy positions, airfields, and shipping. Marine scout bombing squadrons were the tip of the spear for close air support, diving steeply onto targets to deliver their ordnance with accuracy that level bombers could not match. VMSB-342 was part of the Marine aviation force that ensured Marines on the ground always had air support overhead.
