VMSB-243 was a Marine Scout Bombing squadron activated during World War II as part of the Corps' rapid expansion of its aviation combat element. Marine scout bombing squadrons of this era trained to deliver precision dive bombing attacks using the SBD Dauntless and other aircraft types. The dive bombing mission was one of the most dangerous in military aviation — requiring pilots to aim their entire aircraft at the target in a steep dive while enemy anti-aircraft fire tried to knock them from the sky. VMSB-243 contributed to the Marine Corps' overwhelming close air support capability in the Pacific theater.
