Flying the SBD Dauntless and later the SB2C Helldiver, Marine scout bombing squadrons like VMSB-151 conducted precision dive bombing attacks against enemy positions throughout the Pacific campaign. The dive bombing mission demanded exceptional skill and nerve — pilots pushed over into near-vertical dives, holding steady through intense anti-aircraft fire to release their bombs at dangerously low altitude before pulling out. VMSB-151 was part of the force that gave Marine ground commanders organic close air support.
