VMSB-142 was a Marine Scout Bombing squadron that served during World War II, flying the SBD Dauntless dive bomber in the Pacific theater. Marine scout bombing squadrons were the precision strike force of their era, diving nearly vertically onto targets to deliver bombs with devastating accuracy. The SBD Dauntless became one of the most celebrated combat aircraft of the Pacific war, sinking more enemy shipping than any other Allied aircraft type. VMSB-142 crews flew hazardous dive bombing missions against enemy airfields, supply dumps, troop concentrations, and shipping throughout the island campaigns.
