VMO-2 1977 Squadron Patch

Marine Observation Squadron 2 (VMO-2)

Originally commissioned on 1 November 1943 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, as the Artillery Spotting Division of VMO-251, the squadron was redesignated VMO-2 on 1 February 1944 and immediately attached to the 2nd Marine Division in Hawaii. Flying hundreds of missions in OY-1 aircraft, VMO-2 participated in the Battles of Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa during World War II, becoming the first American aircraft to land at Marpi Point Field on Saipan and the first to land on Okinawa. Decommissioned on 26 August 1946, the squadron was recommissioned on 15 June 1951 at MCAS Santa Ana, California, for the Korean War era.

In 1965, VMO-2 deployed to South Vietnam as part of MAG-16 at Marble Mountain Air Facility, Da Nang, flying UH-1E Iroquois helicopters. The squadron received its first OV-10 Broncos on 6 July 1968, and the versatile aircraft logged over 38,000 combat flight hours between September 1968 and March 1971. In August 1990, VMO-2 made aviation history by launching six OV-10s on an unprecedented 16,000-kilometer journey to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield. During Desert Storm, the squadron flew 286 combat missions totaling 900 flight hours, spotting for the USS Wisconsin's first combat firing since the Korean War, and confirmed the destruction of 54 tanks, 53 armored personnel carriers, 49 artillery pieces, and 112 other vehicles.

VMO-2 was deactivated on 23 May 1993 at MCAS Camp Pendleton, California, concluding nearly 50 years of distinguished service across three wars. This 1977-era patch represents the squadron during its Cold War period when it rotated detachments to Okinawa while supporting the 1st Marine Division and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.

Perfect For: VMO-2 veterans, Marine observation squadron personnel, OV-10 Bronco enthusiasts, Vietnam War Marines, Desert Storm veterans, and Marine Corps aviation historians.

A tribute to one of the Marine Corps' most storied observation squadrons, whose legacy spans from the Pacific island campaigns of World War II to the desert battlefields of Kuwait.

Size is shown on the product page and updates with the variant you select (example: 3"). If you’re mounting on a hat or small panel, choose smaller sizes; for plate carriers and display boards, larger sizes fit better.
