VMMT-204 Raptors Maintenance Qual Patches — USMC Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron MV-22 Osprey Patch
Every Osprey pilot in the Marine Corps earned their wings through the Raptors. If you kept those birds flying, this patch is yours.
Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204 (VMMT-204) traces its roots to May 1, 1972, when Marine Helicopter Training Squadron 204 (HMT-204) was activated at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina. Born in the wake of Vietnam, the squadron was formed by combining the personnel and assets of two deactivated training units — Marine Medium Helicopter Training Squadron 402 and Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron 401 — under Marine Aircraft Group 26 and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. For nearly three decades, HMT-204 served as a composite training powerhouse, first qualifying both CH-46 and CH-53 crews, then becoming the sole Fleet Replacement Squadron for the entire Marine Corps CH-46E community after HMT-301 deactivated in October 1993. That made it the largest CH-46E squadron in the Corps. Over its rotary-wing years, the squadron trained more than 1,800 replacement aircrew, over 275 instructor pilots, and more than 450 crew chiefs while amassing over 95,000 Class A mishap-free flight hours — earning the Chief of Naval Operations Safety Award in 1977, 1994, and 1997. On June 10, 1999, HMT-204 turned the page to a new chapter and was redesignated VMMT-204, becoming the Marine Corps’ Fleet Replacement Squadron for the revolutionary MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. The Raptors accepted their first Osprey on March 12, 2000, and have since trained every MV-22 pilot and crew chief in the Marine Corps, as well as USAF CV-22 aircrew. There is only one place in the world where you learn to fly the Osprey, and the Raptors run it. This maintenance qualification patch represents the maintainers and technicians who keep the schoolhouse fleet mission-ready — the backbone of Osprey University.
