VMM-362, the "Ugly Angels," was reactivated on August 17, 2018, at MCAS Miramar, California, flying the MV-22B Osprey under MAG-16 and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron's lineage stretches to 1952 when it was established as HMR-362. In 1962, the Ugly Angels made history as the first Marine aircraft squadron to deploy to South Vietnam, landing UH-34D helicopters at Sóc Trăng under Operation Shufly. The nickname evolved from "Archie's Angels" — after their commanding officer LtCol Archie Clapp — to "Ugly Angels." The squadron served through Vietnam, Desert Storm, Haiti, and Afghanistan before deactivating in 2012. This plank owner patch commemorates the Marines who reactivated the squadron and achieved Full Operational Capability by February 2020.
