Official VMM-268 Endless Summer Down Under Patch — Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 268 Embroidered Patch
Endless Summer Down Under—VMM-268 Red Dragons bring the Osprey to Australia, where the surf is up and the training is world-class in the tropical north.
Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 268 (VMM-268), the "Red Dragons," is assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. Operating the MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, the Red Dragons provide assault support transport capability across the Indo-Pacific theater. This "Endless Summer Down Under" patch commemorates VMM-268's deployment to Australia as part of the Marine Rotational Force–Darwin (MRF-D)—the annual rotation of U.S. Marines to northern Australia that strengthens the U.S.-Australia alliance.
The "Endless Summer" theme captures the unique experience of deploying to Australia's Northern Territory, where tropical warmth, stunning coastlines, and the rugged outback environment create a training backdrop unlike any other Marine deployment. The MRF-D rotation brings approximately 2,500 Marines to Darwin and surrounding areas each year for combined training with the Australian Defence Force, conducting bilateral exercises, live-fire training, and amphibious operations that build interoperability between the two allied forces.
VMM-268 was activated on 30 September 1971 as Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 268 (HMM-268) and has served in multiple conflicts and deployments throughout its history. The Red Dragons transitioned to the MV-22B Osprey, bringing the tiltrotor's revolutionary combination of helicopter vertical lift and fixed-wing speed and range to the Indo-Pacific—a capability perfectly suited for operations across the vast distances of the Australian training area and the broader Pacific region. The squadron's MRF-D deployment demonstrates the Marine Corps' commitment to the U.S.-Australia alliance and the broader Indo-Pacific security architecture.
Perfect For: VMM-268 Red Dragons members and veterans, MRF-D rotation participants, MAG-24 and 1st MAW personnel, MCB Hawaii Marines, MV-22 Osprey community members, and Indo-Pacific deployment patch collectors.
Endless Summer—the Red Dragons of VMM-268, riding the Osprey from Hawaii to Australia, where the alliance is strong and the training never stops.
