In the days before satellites and drones, Marines depended on the pilots and photo interpreters of Marine Photographic Squadrons to capture the battlefield imagery that commanders needed to plan operations and assess enemy positions. This patch carries the identity of VMJ-4, one of the Marine Corps' specialized reconnaissance and photographic intelligence squadrons.
Marine Photographic Squadron 4 (VMJ-4) was part of the Marine Corps' photographic reconnaissance capability, tasked with conducting aerial photography and photo interpretation in support of Marine Air-Ground Task Force operations. These squadrons provided the critical intelligence imagery that allowed commanders to identify enemy positions, plan assault routes, map terrain, and conduct bomb damage assessments. VMJ squadrons operated specialized camera-equipped aircraft and maintained photo interpretation sections that processed and analyzed aerial imagery for tactical and strategic intelligence purposes.
