Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 (VMGR-252) "Otis" is a United States Marine Corps KC-130J Super Hercules squadron based at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina. This Night Ops PVC patch celebrates the squadron's nighttime operations capability, when the Otis crews fly aerial refueling, transport, and other missions under the cover of darkness using night vision systems.
Night operations are among the most demanding missions in the KC-130 community. Flying a four-engine turboprop at low altitude in complete darkness while trailing refueling drogues for Marine helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft requires extraordinary crew coordination, instrument proficiency, and trust in the aircraft's systems. VMGR-252's crews regularly conduct nighttime aerial refueling of AH-1Z Vipers, UH-1Y Venoms, and MV-22B Ospreys, extending the range and persistence of Marine aviation forces operating under the cover of darkness. The Night Ops patch recognizes the crews who excel in this challenging environment and prefer to operate when most people are sleeping.
