VMFAT-101 — the Marine Corps' Fleet Replacement Squadron where every Phantom crew was born.
VMFAT-101 was the Marine Corps' Fleet Replacement Squadron for the F-4 Phantom II, responsible for training every Marine Phantom pilot and radar intercept officer. Based at MCAS Yuma, Arizona, VMFAT-101 operated a fleet of F-4 Phantoms and put student aviators through an intensive training syllabus covering air combat maneuvering, weapons delivery, radar intercept procedures, carrier qualifications, and tactical formation flying. The Phantom was a demanding aircraft that rewarded skilled pilots with Mach 2+ speed, massive weapons capacity, and all-weather capability. Every Marine who strapped into a Phantom for a combat deployment first learned the machine at VMFAT-101.
