VMFA(AW)-533, the "Hawks," traces its origins to October 1, 1943, when it was commissioned as Marine Night Fighter Squadron 533 (VMF(N)-533) at MCAS Cherry Point — originally known as "Black Mac's Killers" after their first CO, Major Marion Magruder. Flying radar-equipped F6F-5N Hellcats, VMF(N)-533 claimed the most aerial victories of any Marine night fighter squadron in WWII, including the Corps' first night fighter ace, Captain Robert Baird. The squadron flew the longest over-water flight by single-engine aircraft in the war — 1,004 nautical miles from Engebi to Saipan. After transitioning through multiple aircraft including the A-6 Intruder (logging over 10,000 combat sorties in Vietnam) and the F/A-18D Hornet — becoming the first all-weather fighter attack squadron in 2nd MAW — the Hawks flew 111 combat sorties over Yugoslavia and earned a Presidential Unit Citation during OIF. Now transitioning to the F-35B Lightning II at MCAS Beaufort.
