This VMFA(AW)-242 "Bats" memorial patch honors Captain Jahmar Resilard, a Marine F/A-18D Hornet pilot who was lost on December 6, 2018, during a mid-air collision off the coast of Japan. Captain Resilard, callsign "Profane 12," gave his life in service to his country while conducting training operations from MCAS Iwakuni. The motto "Mors ex Tenebris" (Death from the Darkness) reflects the Bats' all-weather attack identity and takes on deeper meaning in the context of this memorial.
VMFA(AW)-242 Bats is a Marine all-weather fighter attack squadron that operates the F/A-18D Hornet in the night and adverse weather attack role. The December 6, 2018 incident also involved a VMGR-152 KC-130J Hercules, and the loss of Captain Resilard and five VMGR-152 Marines sent shockwaves through the Marine Corps aviation community.
