VMFA(AW)-121 "Green Knights" holds the historic distinction of being the first operational F-35B Lightning II squadron in the United States Marine Corps and the first operational F-35 squadron in any branch of the U.S. military. The Green Knights transitioned from the F/A-18D Hornet to the F-35B, bringing fifth-generation stealth fighter capability to forward-deployed forces in the Western Pacific. Based at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, the squadron placed F-35B Lightning IIs within striking distance of Pacific theater contingencies. VMFA(AW)-121 has conducted operational deployments aboard amphibious assault ships, demonstrating the F-35B's sea-based strike fighter capability.
