VMFA-531 "Grey Ghosts" was a Marine fighter attack squadron with a history stretching back to World War II. The squadron operated the F-4 Phantom II and the F/A-18 Hornet throughout its existence. The Grey Ghosts name evoked the squadron's ability to appear seemingly from nowhere, striking with devastating precision before disappearing back into the tactical environment. VMFA-531 maintained high standards of combat readiness throughout the Cold War, training for rapid deployment aboard carriers and to forward airfields in support of Marine expeditionary operations.
