The Death Angels operated multiple aircraft types including the F-4 Phantom II and the F/A-18 Hornet. The squadron's fearsome name and skull-themed insignia reflected the grim reality of their primary mission — delivering overwhelming firepower in support of Marines on the ground. VMFA-235 was known for maintaining high combat readiness standards and deployed to the Western Pacific for numerous training exercises that honed their close air support and air combat maneuvering skills.
