VMFA-142 "Flying Gators" was a Marine Reserve fighter attack squadron based at NAS Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Florida, and later NAS Atlanta. The Flying Gators operated the F-4 Phantom II and later transitioned to the F/A-18A Hornet before the squadron was deactivated in 2008. As a Reserve squadron, VMFA-142 maintained full combat readiness while drawing aviators from the civilian workforce — pilots who flew commercial airlines or held professional careers during the week and strapped into tactical jets on drill weekends.
