During the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942, Captain Joe Foss of VMF-121 shot down 26 Japanese aircraft, becoming the top Marine ace of World War II and earning the Medal of Honor. VMF-121 flew F4F Wildcats from the embattled Henderson Field, defending the Marine perimeter against relentless Japanese air attacks. The squadron's heroic stand at Guadalcanal helped turn the tide of the Pacific War.
