The Banshees — VMAQ-1's electronic warfare screams from the sky.
VMAQ-1 "Banshees" operated the EA-6B Prowler from MCAS Cherry Point under MAG-14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, providing tactical electronic warfare support for Marine operations. The Banshee — the wailing spirit of Irish mythology — was a perfect mascot for an electronic warfare squadron whose mission was to fill enemy radar screens with screaming noise. The EA-6B Prowler jammed enemy air defenses, enabling strike aircraft to penetrate hostile airspace. VMAQ-1 deployed extensively to Iraq and Afghanistan before the Prowler was retired and replaced by the EA-18G Growler.
