VMA(AW)-121, the "Green Knights," carries one of the most storied lineages in Marine Corps aviation. Activated on June 24, 1941, as VMF-121, the squadron flew F4F Wildcats and F4U Corsairs as charter members of the legendary Cactus Air Force at Guadalcanal, producing fourteen fighter aces — more than any other Marine squadron — including Medal of Honor recipient Major Joe Foss, who personally downed 26 Japanese aircraft. The Green Knights shot down 208 enemy planes during WWII. After Korea and Vietnam (where they delivered over 1,750 tons of ordnance), the squadron transitioned to the A-6 Intruder for the all-weather attack mission as VMA(AW)-121, then became the first Marine F/A-18D night-attack squadron. During Desert Storm, they flew 557 sorties and 1,655.5 combat hours — more than any other Navy or Marine Corps tactical jet squadron. Now designated VMFA-121, the Green Knights became the world's first operational F-35B Lightning II squadron and are forward-deployed at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan.
