Marine Attack Squadron 513 (VMA-513) "Flying Nightmares" was a United States Marine Corps attack squadron that operated the AV-8B Harrier II, the iconic short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) jet that could operate from austere forward bases, amphibious assault ships, and conventional airfields. The Flying Nightmares' name captured the terror they inflicted on enemy forces — Harriers appearing seemingly from nowhere to deliver devastating close air support.
VMA-513 flew the AV-8B Harrier, one of the most unique attack aircraft in military aviation history. The Harrier's STOVL capability allowed the Flying Nightmares to operate from small clearings, roads, and ship decks that conventional fixed-wing jets could never use, giving Marine ground commanders immediate air support without dependence on established airfields. This tactical flexibility made VMA-513 a nightmare for any adversary — the Harrier could be hiding behind any treeline, on any ship, or at any forward operating location, ready to pop up and deliver precision ordnance on short notice.
