VMA-223 "Bulldogs" traces its lineage to VMF-223, the Marine fighter squadron that defended Henderson Field on Guadalcanal alongside VMF-224 during the critical early days of the campaign in August 1942. Captain Marion Carl, one of the Marine Corps' first aces, flew with VMF-223 at Guadalcanal. The Bulldogs carried their WWII combat legacy through redesignations, eventually becoming VMA-223 in the attack role. This original design preserves the classic Bulldogs insignia.
