VMA-121's World War II lineage connects to VMF-121, one of the most distinguished Marine fighter squadrons of the Pacific War. VMF-121 flew F4F Wildcats from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal, where Captain Joe Foss shot down 26 Japanese aircraft to become the top Marine ace of the war and receive the Medal of Honor. The squadron's WWII service established the fighting reputation that the Green Knights would carry through Korea, Vietnam, and into the modern era.
