Attack Squadron 95 (VA-95), the "Green Lizards," was a distinguished U.S. Navy carrier-based attack squadron that operated the Grumman A-6 Intruder. The Green Lizards were one of the most combat-experienced A-6 squadrons in the Navy, with a record of service that spanned some of the most critical operations of the Vietnam War and Cold War eras.
VA-95's A-6 Intruder crews specialized in the all-weather, low-level attack mission that was the A-6's reason for existence. The Intruder's ability to navigate at treetop level using terrain-following radar and deliver ordnance with pinpoint accuracy in zero-visibility conditions made it the most feared attack aircraft in the Navy's inventory. The Green Lizards exploited these capabilities to their fullest, striking targets that were untouchable by other aircraft due to weather, darkness, or the density of enemy air defenses.
During the Vietnam War, VA-95 flew combat missions over North Vietnam during the most intense periods of the air campaign, including strikes against heavily defended targets during the Linebacker operations. The Green Lizards' pilots and bombardier/navigators faced extraordinary danger on every mission, threading through SAM envelopes and AAA barrages to put ordnance on target. The squadron's combat record earned it a place among the most decorated attack squadrons of the Vietnam era.
