**Officially Licensed US Navy VA-46 Clansmen Sticker — Attack Squadron Vinyl Sticker**
VA-46 Clansmen — the tartan-painted attack squadron that survived the Forrestal fire with John McCain, struck Libya in ’86, and flew the very last Navy A-7 Corsair combat sortie during Desert Storm.
VA-46 was established at NAS Cecil Field, Florida, on May 24, 1955, initially flying F9F-8 Cougars. The squadron’s Scottish identity was chosen by its first commander, Clifford A. McDougal, who incorporated the McDougal clan tartan into the insignia — a tradition so complex that painting the tartan on aircraft required multiple layers of masking tape and paint. In 1956, VA-46 took the AIM-9 Sidewinder missile on its first overseas deployment. On July 29, 1967, aboard USS Forrestal on Yankee Station, a catastrophic flight deck fire killed 134 men and destroyed seven of the squadron’s A-4E Skyhawks; then-LCDR John McCain was among the VA-46 personnel caught in the inferno. The Clansmen went on to fly A-7E Corsair IIs, striking Libyan radar sites during Operation El Dorado Canyon in April 1986. During Desert Storm in January 1991, VA-46 participated in the first strikes against Baghdad and flew the Navy’s last A-7 Corsair II combat sorties. The squadron was disestablished on June 30, 1991.
