USS Will Rogers (SSBN-659) was the last of the 41 Benjamin Franklin and Lafayette-class ballistic missile submarines built for the United States Navy, completing the "41 for Freedom" fleet that formed the backbone of America's sea-based nuclear deterrent during the Cold War. Named after the beloved American humorist and entertainer Will Rogers, SSBN-659 carried Polaris and later Poseidon submarine-launched ballistic missiles on strategic deterrent patrols throughout the Cold War.
As the 41st and final boat of the 41 for Freedom program, USS Will Rogers holds a unique place in naval history. Her crew maintained the same grueling operational tempo as her sister ships — months-long deterrent patrols in the depths of the ocean, operating in absolute silence and secrecy while standing ready to execute the most consequential mission in military history if ordered. The Blue and Gold crew rotation system kept Will Rogers on station for maximum patrol time, ensuring America's nuclear deterrent never rested. The 41 for Freedom program was one of the most successful strategic weapons programs in history, and Will Rogers was its capstone.
