USS Wasp (LHD-1), commissioned in 1989, is the lead ship of the Wasp-class landing helicopter dock amphibious assault ships. The Wasp class introduced a well deck, vehicle storage, and an enhanced flight deck capable of operating the full range of Marine rotary wing, tiltrotor, and short takeoff/vertical landing aircraft. USS Wasp has deployed worldwide, supporting Marine Expeditionary Units in operations from humanitarian relief to combat.
