USS Valley Forge (LPH-8) was commissioned in 1961 as an Iwo Jima-class amphibious assault helicopter carrier. The ship deployed Marine helicopter squadrons and embarked Marines throughout the Cold War and Vietnam era, participating in amphibious operations and humanitarian missions. Valley Forge served for over 31 years before decommissioning in 1992.
