USS Tennessee BB-48 Patch — USS Tennessee (BB-43) Battleship Embroidered Patch
USS Tennessee (BB-43) — the Tennessee-class battleship that survived Pearl Harbor and came back to win the war across the Pacific.
USS Tennessee (BB-43) was the lead ship of the Tennessee-class battleships, commissioned in 1920. Armed with twelve 14-inch guns in four triple turrets, Tennessee was one of the "Standard" type battleships that formed the backbone of the interwar U.S. Navy battle line. The ship was built at the New York Navy Yard and served in the Pacific Fleet throughout the interwar period.
On December 7, 1941, USS Tennessee was moored on Battleship Row at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese launched their devastating surprise attack. Though damaged by bomb hits and fires from the burning USS West Virginia alongside her, Tennessee survived the attack and was repaired and extensively modernized. The reconstruction transformed her into a virtually new ship with improved fire control, additional anti-aircraft armament, and torpedo defense systems.
After her rebuild, USS Tennessee returned to the Pacific War and participated in shore bombardment operations across the island-hopping campaign, providing devastating naval gunfire support at operations including the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Saipan, Guam, Peleliu, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. At the Battle of Surigao Strait in October 1944, Tennessee was among the battleships that crossed the Japanese "T" in the last battleship-versus-battleship engagement in naval history.
