USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier named after the 26th President of the United States. This Shooters patch honors the catapult officers ("Shooters") who are responsible for the safe and efficient launch of every aircraft from Roosevelt's flight deck — one of the most high-pressure and visible jobs on an aircraft carrier.
The Shooter is the officer who gives the final signal to launch each aircraft from the carrier's steam or electromagnetic catapults. Standing just feet from the catapult shuttle, the Shooter performs the iconic crouching launch signal that sends multi-million-dollar aircraft and their crews hurtling from zero to 170 miles per hour in under three seconds. It's a position of enormous responsibility — a Shooter must verify that the aircraft is properly configured, the catapult is set correctly, and the deck is clear before every single launch. On USS Theodore Roosevelt, Shooters launch dozens of aircraft daily during flight operations, each launch requiring split-second timing and absolute precision.
