USS North Carolina BB-55 Patch — North Carolina-Class Battleship Embroidered Patch
The Showboat — first modern American battleship of World War II.
USS North Carolina (BB-55) was the lead ship of the North Carolina-class and the first new American battleship commissioned after the Washington Naval Treaty restrictions were lifted. Known as "The Showboat" for the attention she received during her commissioning in 1941, North Carolina went on to earn 15 battle stars during World War II — one of the highest totals of any warship in the American fleet. She is now preserved as a museum ship in Wilmington, North Carolina.
USS North Carolina arrived in the Pacific in 1942 and immediately proved her worth during the Guadalcanal campaign, where her anti-aircraft batteries helped defend the carrier task forces against Japanese air attacks. The Showboat participated in virtually every major Pacific campaign thereafter, providing gunfire support and carrier escort from the Solomons through the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Marianas, Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Her combination of nine 16-inch guns and a massive anti-aircraft battery made her one of the most versatile and effective warships in the fleet. North Carolina's 15 battle stars testify to her presence at nearly every significant naval engagement of the Pacific War.
This patch honors The Showboat and her extraordinary wartime record.
Perfect For: USS North Carolina (BB-55) descendants, World War II Pacific veterans' families, battleship museum visitors, and American warship history collectors.
