USS Nathan Hale (SSBN-623) was a Lafayette-class fleet ballistic missile submarine named after Nathan Hale, the American patriot and spy who was executed by the British during the Revolutionary War. Hale's famous last words — "I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country" — made him one of the most celebrated heroes in American history.
SSBN-623 carried Polaris and later Poseidon submarine-launched ballistic missiles on strategic deterrent patrols throughout the Cold War. The submarine's Blue and Gold crews maintained continuous readiness beneath the ocean's surface, prepared to launch nuclear weapons if ordered. Naming a nuclear submarine after Nathan Hale connected the ultimate act of patriotic sacrifice with the ultimate weapon of national defense — the crew members who served aboard SSBN-623 were following in Hale's tradition of selfless service, spending months underwater in cramped conditions, separated from their families, maintaining the nuclear deterrence that protected the nation they loved.
