USS Massachusetts BB-59 Patch — South Dakota-Class Battleship Embroidered Patch
Big Mamie — from Casablanca to the Pacific.
USS Massachusetts (BB-59), affectionately known as "Big Mamie," was a South Dakota-class battleship that served with distinction in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II. Commissioned in 1942, Massachusetts saw her first action during Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa, where she engaged the Vichy French battleship Jean Bart at Casablanca in one of the few battleship-to-battleship engagements of the Atlantic war.
After her Atlantic service, USS Massachusetts transferred to the Pacific, where she joined the fast carrier task forces that swept across the Central Pacific. Big Mamie's nine 16-inch main battery guns and powerful anti-aircraft armament made her a formidable surface combatant and carrier escort. She participated in operations at the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, and the Philippines, bombarding Japanese shore positions and providing air defense for the carrier fleet. Massachusetts fired the first and last American 16-inch shells of the war. Today, BB-59 is preserved as a museum ship at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts, where visitors can walk her decks and experience the might of a World War II fast battleship.
This patch honors one of America's best-preserved battleships.
Perfect For: USS Massachusetts BB-59 veterans and descendants, Battleship Cove visitors, World War II naval history enthusiasts, and battleship patch collectors.
