USS Makin Island (LHD-8) is a modified Wasp-class amphibious assault ship and the newest ship of her class in the United States Navy. Named after the World War II Battle of Makin Island, LHD-8 is one of the most capable amphibious warfare ships in the fleet, serving as the flagship for Amphibious Ready Groups and the floating base for Marine Expeditionary Units that project American power from sea to shore.
USS Makin Island is unique among the Wasp-class ships as the first Navy surface combatant to feature a hybrid gas turbine/electric drive propulsion system, significantly improving fuel efficiency and reducing the ship's environmental footprint. At nearly 850 feet in length, Makin Island carries a potent mix of Marine aircraft — including MV-22B Ospreys, F-35B Lightning IIs, AH-1Z Vipers, UH-1Y Venoms, and CH-53E Super Stallions — along with landing craft, assault vehicles, and a Marine landing force. Known affectionately as the "Gator Freighter," LHD-8 is a self-contained expeditionary base that can sustain Marine operations for weeks without shore support.
