USS John Adams (SSBN-620) was a Lafayette-class fleet ballistic missile submarine named after John Adams, the second President of the United States and one of the nation's most important Founding Fathers. The submarine carried Polaris and later Poseidon submarine-launched ballistic missiles on strategic deterrent patrols.
SSBN-620 served throughout the Cold War as part of the fleet ballistic missile submarine force that provided the most survivable leg of America's nuclear triad. John Adams — who as a delegate to the Continental Congress championed the creation of the Continental Navy — would have been astounded by the submarine that bore his name: a nuclear-powered vessel capable of remaining submerged for months, armed with ballistic missiles that could strike targets thousands of miles away. The naming honored Adams' role in creating the American navy and his vision of a strong national defense. SSBN-620's Blue and Gold crews carried forward that vision, maintaining nuclear deterrence through decades of silent patrols.
