USS James K. Polk (SSBN-645) was a Benjamin Franklin-class fleet ballistic missile submarine named after James Knox Polk, the 11th President of the United States whose presidency saw the greatest territorial expansion in American history through the concept of Manifest Destiny.
SSBN-645 carried Poseidon and later Trident I submarine-launched ballistic missiles on strategic deterrent patrols. The submarine's Blue and Gold crews maintained the nuclear deterrence posture that kept the peace during the Cold War, operating in near-total secrecy beneath the world's oceans. President Polk expanded American territory from coast to coast; the submarine that bore his name expanded American military reach to every ocean on Earth. James K. Polk may have been one of the lesser-known presidents, but his impact on American geography was transformative, and the SSBN that carried his name had an equally transformative impact on Cold War deterrence strategy.
