USS George Bancroft (SSBN-643) was a James Madison-class fleet ballistic missile submarine named after George Bancroft, the 19th-century historian and statesman who served as Secretary of the Navy and founded the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. The submarine carried Polaris and later Poseidon submarine-launched ballistic missiles on strategic deterrent patrols.
SSBN-643 conducted Cold War strategic deterrent patrols beneath the world's oceans, her Blue and Gold crews maintaining constant readiness to launch nuclear weapons in response to a Soviet first strike. The naming of a nuclear submarine after the founder of the Naval Academy created a powerful connection between the Navy's intellectual origins and its most technologically advanced weapons platform. George Bancroft, who transformed American naval education, would have marveled at the submarine that bore his name — a vessel capable of remaining submerged for months, carrying enough nuclear warheads to destroy entire nations, all operated by the graduates of the institution he founded.
