USS California BB-44 Patch — United States Navy Battleship USS California (BB-44) Embroidered Patch
USS California BB-44 — the Golden State battleship that rose from the mud of Pearl Harbor.
USS California (BB-44) was a Tennessee-class battleship commissioned in 1921, known as "The Prune Barge" to her crew. On December 7, 1941, California was moored along Battleship Row at Pearl Harbor when Japanese torpedo bombers struck — she took two torpedo hits and a bomb hit, flooding and settling to the harbor bottom in what appeared to be a total loss.
But USS California refused to die. Salvage crews raised the battleship from the mud of Pearl Harbor, and she underwent a complete reconstruction that transformed her from a 1920s-era dreadnought into a modern fast battleship with updated fire control, radar, and anti-aircraft systems. California returned to the fleet in 1944 and immediately went into action, providing devastating naval gunfire support during the invasions of the Mariana Islands, Leyte, and Lingayen Gulf. At the Battle of Surigao Strait in October 1944, California was part of the battle line that crossed the Japanese T and helped destroy Vice Admiral Nishimura's Southern Force — sweet revenge for Pearl Harbor. Her resurrection from the bottom of Pearl Harbor to the final victory in the Pacific is one of the great comeback stories in naval history.
This patch honors BB-44's incredible journey.
