USS Andrew Jackson (SSBN-619) was a Lafayette-class ballistic missile submarine that served as a key element of America's nuclear deterrent during the Cold War. Named after the seventh President of the United States, Andrew Jackson carried Polaris and later Poseidon submarine-launched ballistic missiles, maintaining a constant, undetectable presence beneath the world's oceans as a guarantee of nuclear retaliation against any aggressor.
SSBN-619 was part of the "41 for Freedom" fleet of ballistic missile submarines that formed the most survivable leg of America's nuclear triad. Andrew Jackson's crew operated in absolute secrecy, deploying on patrols lasting months at a time in the deep ocean, maintaining the readiness to launch nuclear missiles within minutes of receiving a valid launch order. The submarine operated with two crews (Blue and Gold) to maximize patrol time, ensuring the deterrent was always on station. The men who served aboard Andrew Jackson accepted the tremendous responsibility of manning a weapons system that could reshape the world, and their silent, unseen vigilance helped prevent nuclear conflict throughout the Cold War.
