The Basic School (TBS) is the United States Marine Corps' foundational officer training institution, located at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. Every newly commissioned Marine officer — regardless of their future Military Occupational Specialty — attends The Basic School for approximately six months of intensive training in infantry tactics, leadership, weapons employment, land navigation, and the art of commanding Marines in combat. TBS is where the Marine Corps forges its officers into the well-rounded warfighters and leaders that the Corps demands.
This OD green variant of The Basic School patch features a subdued, field-appropriate color scheme that integrates seamlessly with utility uniforms and tactical gear. The Basic School's curriculum is deliberately demanding, designed to ensure that every Marine officer — whether destined for infantry, aviation, logistics, or intelligence — is first and foremost a capable rifle platoon commander. This philosophy, unique among the U.S. military services, ensures that every Marine officer shares a common tactical foundation and understands the fundamentals of ground combat leadership. TBS graduates carry those lessons throughout their entire careers, from second lieutenant to general officer.
