USMC MAG-49 DET A Patch
Marine Aircraft Group 49, Detachment A (MAG-49 Det A)
Marine Aircraft Group 49 is a reserve aviation unit of the United States Marine Corps, part of the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing under Marine Forces Reserve. Originally designated Marine Aircraft Group 43 and reactivated on 1 July 1962 at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, the group was redesignated MAG-49 in September 1972. Its mission is to organize, train, and equip combat-ready squadrons to augment and reinforce active Marine forces in time of war, national emergency, or contingency operations.
MAG-49 Detachment A was historically located at Andrews Air Force Base (now Joint Base Andrews), Maryland, where it oversaw reserve aviation operations in the National Capital Region, including VMFA-321 Hell's Angels and associated MALS and support detachments. During the Gulf War, individual members of MAG-49 mobilized to serve with various units in Saudi Arabia, while subordinate units provided air traffic control support at multiple Marine air stations. In 2011, MAG-49 relocated from NAS Willow Grove to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, following the BRAC-directed closure of Willow Grove.
Today, MAG-49 continues its vital reserve mission from Joint Base MDL, with approximately 2,000 citizen-Marines training across multiple sites throughout the northeastern United States, ensuring the motto "Experience the Force" is reflected in their constant readiness.
Perfect For: MAG-49 veterans and personnel, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing Marines, Marine Corps Reserve aviators, NAS Willow Grove alumni, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Marines.
Honoring the citizen-Marines of MAG-49 whose reserve aviation readiness ensures the Marine Corps can rapidly expand its combat air power when the nation calls.
