The 3rd Tank Battalion Anti-Tank Company was a specialized unit within the 3rd Marine Regiment that provided dedicated anti-armor capability using the TOW (Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided) missile system. Based with the 3rd Marines in Hawaii, the Anti-Tank Company was trained and equipped to destroy enemy armored vehicles at extended range, providing a critical defensive and offensive capability that complemented the regiment's organic tank and infantry forces.
Anti-Tank Company Marines operated the TOW missile system — one of the most proven anti-armor weapons in the American military arsenal. The TOW could destroy main battle tanks, armored personnel carriers, and fortified positions at ranges exceeding 3,000 meters, giving Marine commanders a powerful standoff anti-armor capability. The company's Marines trained extensively in anti-armor tactics, target identification, and the complex art of positioning TOW systems to create interlocking fields of fire that could stop an enemy armored assault. With the Marine Corps' eventual divestiture of tank units under Force Design 2030, units like the Anti-Tank Company represent a bygone era of Marine Corps combined arms warfare.
