Aerial refueling is the enabling capability that makes global power projection possible — without it, combat aircraft would be limited to the range of their internal fuel tanks.
The 97th AREFS operates large tanker aircraft capable of transferring thousands of pounds of fuel to receiver aircraft in flight, using both the boom and drogue refueling methods to service Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and allied aircraft. Aerial refueling operations require extraordinary precision and coordination — two aircraft flying in close formation at hundreds of miles per hour while transferring volatile fuel through a rigid boom or trailing drogue basket. The 97th's crews fly day and night, in all weather conditions, supporting everything from routine training flights to combat missions in contested airspace.
