The 463rd Bombardment Group was activated during World War II and flew B-17 Flying Fortresses with the Fifteenth Air Force from bases in Italy, conducting strategic bombing missions against Axis targets across Southern Europe, the Balkans, and Germany. The "Bombers Inc." nickname captured the industrial scale of the Fifteenth Air Force's strategic bombing campaign — systematic, relentless, and delivered on schedule. The 463rd participated in some of the most heavily defended raids of the war, including missions against the Ploesti oil refineries in Romania and industrial targets deep inside the Third Reich.
