The Rampagers deployed repeatedly to the Mediterranean Sea and Southeast Asia, conducting strike missions during the Vietnam War. During their Mediterranean deployments, VA-83 maintained a forward presence during periods of heightened tension in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean. The squadron compiled a distinguished record of combat operations, earning multiple awards for operational excellence and safety. VA-83 was eventually redesignated VFA-83 and transitioned to the F/A-18C Hornet, continuing the Rampager tradition as a strike fighter squadron.
