Attack Squadron 66 (VA-66), the "Waldomen," was a U.S. Navy carrier-based attack squadron that operated both the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and the Vought A-7 Corsair II during its service life. The Waldomen served with the Atlantic Fleet, deploying aboard aircraft carriers to the Mediterranean Sea, North Atlantic, and other theaters as part of the Navy's global power projection capability.
VA-66's transition from the A-4 Skyhawk to the A-7 Corsair II mirrored the broader evolution of Navy attack aviation, as squadrons upgraded from the light, simple Skyhawk to the more capable Corsair with its computerized weapons delivery system and increased range and payload. The Waldomen mastered both platforms, maintaining the attack community's tradition of precision ordnance delivery from the carrier deck in all weather conditions.
The Waldomen deployed during some of the most tense periods of the Cold War, when Atlantic Fleet carriers stood ready to respond to Soviet aggression in Europe or crises in the Mediterranean and Middle East.
